Walk the inhabited castle hill slowly, treating its walls, churches and homes as one continuing neighbourhood
Kale is not a sealed fortress with one gate and ticket. Roads and foot lanes rise through a residential quarter where sections of wall, towers, churches and carved rock appear between occupied houses. Starting after the Byzantine Museum makes those fragments legible. Go in cooler morning or late-afternoon light and leave time to look back across the plain rather than racing to a single viewpoint.
Residents' doors and courtyards are private even when old masonry draws the eye. Stay on public lanes, keep voices low and never climb walls or enter rock chambers closed by barriers. Cobble, loose stone and steep gradients make supportive shoes necessary; ask locally for the least difficult approach if mobility is limited. Summer shade is intermittent and winter ice can make the upper lanes unsafe.
