The protected old market grew between two mosques and still mixes food shops, workshops, clothing and everyday errands. Orthodox churches, Muslim religious buildings and traces of Armenian and Jewish life sit within the wider centre, but the value of the route is seeing how present-day Komotini uses this inherited street plan.
Allow ninety minutes before adding a museum or lunch. The market is liveliest during normal shopping hours; some lanes become quiet in the afternoon and on Sundays.
