Hermit Caves of Badovas

A guided walking area beneath the rocks where small caves, chapels and former hermitages reveal the landscape’s earliest ascetic communities.

Our take

Meteora before the great monasteries

The grand monasteries can make Meteora feel monumental, but Badovas restores the human scale. Paths below the rocks pass caves and tiny religious structures associated with hermits who sought isolation here before organised communities moved to the summits. The route helps explain why this geology became a spiritual landscape.

Go with a knowledgeable local guide: access, path condition and the sensitivity of individual sites require judgement. Do not enter closed caves, touch religious objects or treat the area as an abandoned film set. Quiet observation is the point.
