Great Meteoron Monastery

The oldest and largest of Meteora’s active monasteries, with a rich katholikon, historic refectory, museum collections and expansive rock-top views.

Our take

Meteora’s largest monastery and deepest historical collection

Founded in the 14th century by Saint Athanasios the Meteorite, Great Meteoron became the most influential community on the rocks. Beyond the dramatic ascent, the complex preserves a frescoed church, old kitchen, refectory, manuscripts and historical displays that explain monastic life more fully than a viewpoint alone.

Opening days rotate among Meteora’s monasteries and change seasonally, so verify the official schedule before setting out. Expect many steps, dress according to monastery requirements and make space for worshippers. One or two carefully visited monasteries are more rewarding than racing through every open gate.
