Follow the harbour, mermaid and captains' streets without trespassing on working institutions
Start at the bronze mermaid near the harbour entrance, continue to the Maritime Museum and then climb through the village toward Agios Nikolaos and the seafarers' monuments. Large houses and maritime schools give the route its character, but the most revealing moments are the sightlines back to the strait and ordinary lanes connecting port, church and home. Visit the museum first when possible.
Allow two hours and expect steps, slopes, polished paving and strong sun. The Merchant Marine Academy, schools and many houses are active or private; admire them from public streets and obey any gate or security notice. Keep voices low, ask before photographing residents and carry water. Finish before dusk if you do not know the lanes, or bring a torch rather than relying on continuous street lighting.
