The collection that explains how a very small island shaped modern Greek shipping
The museum is the intellectual centre of a visit to Oinousses. Housed in a waterfront mansion, its collections include ship models made during the Napoleonic period, navigation instruments, weapons, documents, photographs and paintings by the local maritime artist Aristidis Glykas. Together they show how island families moved from sail to steam and later merchant fleets without turning that history into a simple roll call of shipowners.
Go early in the stay, because the exhibits make the academy, monuments and large houses outside easier to read. Published hours are mainly daytime and may change seasonally; telephone before relying on a weekend opening. Allow at least an hour, ask about photography and keep bags clear of cases in the compact rooms. The museum is close to the ferry landing, but a tight same-day connection leaves no margin for delays.
