Choose an out-and-back distance matched to daylight, weather and ability. A longer route should come from a current local track or guide, not an unverified line copied from an old map.
Download an offline map, tell someone the plan and carry water, a light and a charged phone. Forestry work, storm damage, hunting periods, snow and summer fire closures can all change access. Yield to working vehicles and never block a forest road with a parked car. Turn back before visibility deteriorates; mountain cloud and winter darkness arrive faster than coast-based itineraries suggest.
