Horostasi Square and Historic Houses

A compact circuit around Horostasi joins Arnaia's main square, old school, restored mansions and lanes of characteristic Macedonian houses.

Our take

Read Arnaia house by house, from projecting upper floors and painted plaster to the plane tree at its social centre

Start at Horostasi and move slowly through the lanes around the museums rather than driving from marker to marker. Projecting timber-framed upper floors, stone bases, enclosed courtyards and changing colours show how families adapted local forms over time. The former school and municipal buildings add a civic layer to the domestic streetscape.

The centre remains residential. Photograph facades from public lanes, keep voices low and never enter a courtyard because a door is open. Cobbles, slopes and parked vehicles interrupt step-free movement; visitors with mobility needs should explore the square first and choose side streets selectively. Park outside the tight core and allow ninety minutes, longer if either museum is open.
