Strongyli Lagoon Birdwatching

Strongyli is a small protected coastal lagoon near Pounta and Pavlopetri, adding wetland ecology to the Elafonisos crossing landscape.

Our take

Observe the seasonal wetland from firm public ground, keeping distance from birds, archaeology and the shifting channel beside Pounta

Strongyli sits on the mainland side of the crossing, close to Pounta beach and the Pavlopetri archaeological zone. Its water level, salinity and bird presence shift with season and weather, so a quiet scan with binoculars is more appropriate than expecting a guaranteed species display. The lagoon also helps explain how this low coast combines dunes, wetland, beach and submerged cultural remains.

Observe only from established roads or paths and do not enter reeds, salt crust or soft shoreline. Keep well back from feeding and resting birds, especially during migration, and never use sound playback. The ground can flood or become unstable, while summer heat provides little shade. Park without obstructing ferry traffic or local tracks, carry optics rather than approaching wildlife, and combine the stop with Pavlopetri only where public access is clearly indicated.
