Paddle Ithaca's indented east coast with a weather plan and a clear margin for the return
A kayak makes the coastline east of Vathy legible. The published route passes Lazaretto, small beaches and headlands before reaching better-known stops such as Gidaki, Filiatro and Sarakiniko. At a steady pace it can occupy three to five hours, but landing choices and a swim easily extend the day. This is a journey with harbour traffic and exposed sections, not a chain of guaranteed calm coves.
Use a reputable operator unless you have sea-kayaking experience, and carry a buoyancy aid, spray deck where appropriate, water, sun protection and a means of calling for help. The municipality warns that afternoon northwesterlies and traffic near Vathy's entrance need attention. Start only after a current marine forecast, leave a turnaround margin and cancel when wind rises. Never enter sea caves in swell or separate from the group to chase a photograph.
