Kommos Beach

Kommos offers open sand, sunset views and a quieter alternative to Matala, within a protected archaeological and sea-turtle nesting landscape.

Our take

A long sandy shore beside an ancient Minoan harbour

Kommos runs north from the archaeological site of the ancient harbour, facing west across the Messara Gulf. The long sandy beach absorbs visitors well, with a small organised area near the northern access and increasingly sparse services toward the protected southern end.

Sections are used by nesting loggerhead turtles. Keep clear of marked nests, remove every item at dusk and never drive on the sand. The open aspect brings waves and current in westerly weather, while the offshore rocks near the south require care. Archaeological fencing must be respected even when no excavation is active.
