Milos at its most geological
Sarakiniko is less a conventional beach than a coastal landscape. Wind and water have smoothed pale volcanic material into gullies, shelves and low cliffs around a small sandy inlet. Walk beyond the first viewpoint and the scale becomes clearer, but do not confuse photogenic rock with a managed swimming facility.
There is almost no natural shade and the north-facing coast is exposed when the meltemi is running. Go near sunrise or late in the day, carry water and proper sun protection, and stay out of the sea when local conditions make the inlet rough. Jumping from the rocks demands a personal depth and safety assessment; popularity is not proof that a spot is safe.
