Santorini before the caldera villages
Akrotiri changes the way Santorini is understood. Beneath a protective roof, raised walkways pass multi-storey buildings, storage rooms, drainage and public spaces buried by the great second-millennium BCE eruption. The famous frescoes are largely displayed in Athens, but the town plan itself is the revelation.
Arrive near opening for cooler, quieter conditions and allow at least an hour. A qualified guide adds value because the surviving walls can otherwise look abstract. Pair the site with the island’s prehistoric museum in Fira if possible, and check official access information rather than relying on beach-tour timetables.
