Amorgos is a long, rugged Cycladic island known for the cliffside Hozoviotissa Monastery, walking trails and villages with a strong local rhythm.
The white Monastery of Hozoviotissa appears almost fused to a sheer rock face above the Aegean. It is Amorgos's defining sight, but the island's character also lives in Chora's lanes, the farming villages of Aegiali and the ancient remains at Minoa, Arkesini and Aegiali.
Old mule paths cross dry mountains between chapels and sea views, making spring and autumn especially rewarding. Beaches are smaller and less accessible than on resort islands; Amorgos suits travellers drawn to walking, diving and evenings that remain rooted in village life.
Practical information
Ferries use both Katapola and Aegiali, at opposite ends of the island. Check your arrival port, use buses or a car for long distances and dress modestly for Hozoviotissa.
