Why go

A medieval Catholic settlement winding above Ermoupoli.

Ano Syros climbs around the cathedral of Saint George in narrow, stepped lanes shaped by centuries of Catholic Cycladic life.

Built defensively on the hill of Agios Georgios, Ano Syros preserves a maze of arches, tiny squares and houses fitted to the slope. Its Catholic cathedral crowns the settlement, reflecting a religious tradition that remains central to Syros's unusual identity.

The village is also linked to rebetiko composer Markos Vamvakaris, whose small museum adds a musical thread to the walk. Views open across Ermoupoli's grand civic buildings and the neighbouring Orthodox hill of Ano Vrontado.

Practical information

Buses and taxis climb from Ermoupoli, but the settlement itself is all steps and pedestrian lanes. Visit in the cooler late afternoon and wear secure shoes.
