Apiranthos is a high Naxian village of marble-paved alleys, stone towers, small museums and strong local speech and craft traditions.
Apiranthos clings to the slopes of Mount Fanari, its lanes and archways paved in local marble. Venetian-era towers, shaded squares and tightly packed houses create a mountain character far removed from the island's beach resorts.
Several compact museums cover archaeology, geology, natural history and folk culture. The village also maintains distinctive linguistic and musical traditions, with tavernas serving upland Naxian dishes and local cheeses.
Practical information
Buses run from Naxos Town but are limited outside summer. Roads are winding and parking sits outside the pedestrian core; combine the visit with Filoti or Mount Zas.
