Delos is a UNESCO-listed archaeological island where temples, mosaics, theatres and merchant houses reveal a major sanctuary and trading port.
In antiquity, Delos was sacred to Apollo and Artemis and later became a cosmopolitan commercial centre. The Sacred Way, Terrace of the Lions, theatre district and richly decorated houses make the island one of Greece's most extensive open archaeological landscapes.
There is no modern town and almost no shade. The museum and site are experienced together on a regulated day visit, with Mount Kynthos offering a broader view when time and weather permit. Delos deserves attention beyond its role as a Mykonos excursion.
Practical information
Licensed boats usually leave Mykonos and sometimes Paros or Naxos. Landing is controlled, overnight stays are not permitted, and visitors need water, a hat and secure shoes.
