Makronisos is a protected historic place associated with political imprisonment and exile during Greece's civil-war era, not a leisure island.
The long, bare island opposite Lavrio was used as a prison and 'rehabilitation' camp for soldiers and civilians during and after the Greek Civil War. Surviving buildings and the landscape itself bear witness to coercion, suffering and contested national memory.
Makronisos should be approached as a historic site rather than an empty coast for recreation. There is no ordinary visitor settlement, and structures can be unsafe. Responsible interpretation requires context and respect for former prisoners and their families.
Practical information
There is no regular public ferry. Access conditions and protected-site rules can change; consult the Ministry of Culture or licensed local operators before considering a visit.
