Cave houses and caldera sunsets in Santorini's most photographed village.

Oia occupies Santorini's northern caldera rim, known for blue-domed churches, naval architecture, galleries and crowded but remarkable sunset views.

Oia's lanes weave between cave houses, captains' mansions and churches built along the volcanic cliff. The Maritime Museum explains the village's prosperous sailing past, while steps descend to Ammoudi Bay for swimming access and seafood beneath red rock.

Sunset brings intense crowding around the castle ruins and main lanes. The village is more rewarding early in the morning, on the walk from Imerovigli, or after day visitors leave. Its beauty is real, but so are heat, steps and premium prices.

Practical information

Buses connect Oia with Fira; parking and taxis are difficult at peak times. Never block private terraces for photos, and allow extra time for the steep Ammoudi climb.
