Orestiada was founded in the 1920s by refugees from the area around Edirne, making it one of Greece's youngest cities. Its grid plan, museums and civic life reflect a community built after forced population movement.
The surrounding Evros plain is agricultural and strategically important. Orestiada is not a conventional sightseeing stop, but it gives travellers a clearer understanding of contemporary Thrace, border geography and the region's close cultural connections.
