Syros combines grand Ermoupoli, medieval Ano Syros, Catholic and Orthodox traditions, rebetiko music and a coast of accessible village beaches.
Syros became an economic centre of the new Greek state, and Ermoupoli still displays that history in its town hall, theatre, mansions and shipyards. Above it, Catholic Ano Syros preserves medieval lanes and the musical legacy of Markos Vamvakaris.
The island remains active all year as the Cyclades' administrative capital. Villages such as Kini, Galissas and Finikas provide easy beach bases, while festivals and restaurants give the island cultural substance beyond summer.
Practical information
Frequent ferries and flights connect Syros with Athens. Public buses form a useful loop around the main southern beaches, making a car optional for many stays.
