Rhodes and Symi are the most legible first pairing in the southern Dodecanese. Rhodes provides a major medieval city, archaeological landscapes and a long coast; Symi compresses the experience into one theatrical harbour, small bays and quiet evenings. Nine days gives Rhodes substance and lets Symi exist beyond a day excursion.

Before booking

Confirm the Rhodes–Symi ferry for both directions and identify the Rhodes departure port. Spend the final night on Rhodes before an international flight. Keep the rental car on Rhodes unless the agreement and ferry booking explicitly allow otherwise; Symi does not require the same vehicle.

Days 1–3: Rhodes Old Town

Stay within walking distance of the walls. Use the first day to understand the gates and street plan, the second for the Palace of the Grand Master and Archaeological Museum, and the third for the modern town or a guided walk through less obvious Ottoman and Jewish layers. UNESCO status describes a living city, not an outdoor set.

Days 4–6: Lindos and the east coast

Collect a car and move south or use one base with an early drive. Reach the Lindos acropolis at opening time, eat at Mavrikos and leave the afternoon for a swim. On another day, choose Tsambika for space or Anthony Quinn Bay for rock and snorkelling—not both in a parking race.

Days 7–8: Sleep on Symi

Return the car and take the confirmed sailing. Walk Yialos and climb toward Chorio after the heat softens. On the full day, use a licensed boat to reach a cove or Panormitis if the route and weather suit; otherwise enjoy a slow land day. Symi’s midday excursion traffic is precisely why two nights matter.

Day 9: Return to Rhodes

Take a morning or early-afternoon sailing and stay near Rhodes Town or the airport. A delayed ferry then costs dinner, not the flight. If the flight leaves late that evening, accept a same-day link only with several hours and a later alternative.

What to reserve

  • First: both Symi sailings, two Symi nights and the final Rhodes night.
  • Next: Old Town entry, rental car and one Lindos lunch.
  • Keep flexible: the beach and Symi boat day.
  • Avoid: attaching a ferry arrival directly to an unprotected flight.
