The museum is the essential first stop for the Petrified Forest rather than a wet-weather substitute. Its exhibitions connect fossil trunks, roots, leaves and animal remains to the volcanic activity and long geological evolution of Lesbos and the Aegean. Indoor displays give scale and context that a single exposed trunk cannot, while the grounds introduce plants in the landscape around Sigri.
Sigri is roughly 90 kilometres from Mytilene on slow roads, so combine the museum with one officially open fossil park and avoid stacking it into a cross-island dash. Check the museum's own site for seasonal hours, park information and any Nisiopi boat excursion. Fossils are protected: stay on marked routes, never chip or remove material and do not use a drone without permission. Carry water and sun protection for outdoor sections.
