The island economy before luxury tourism

The D. Nomikos factory at Vlychada processed Santorini’s small, intensely flavoured tomatoes when agriculture and industry—not hotel terraces—shaped the island’s economy. Restored machinery, labels, recordings and the waterfront building explain how the crop moved from dry volcanic fields into tins and markets abroad.

The museum gives welcome substance to a south-coast day and works well before or after Vlychada’s beach. Its programme and opening period are seasonal, so consult the official calendar. Workshops and events can be as rewarding as the standard visit.
