A Byzantine church among the island’s vineyards

Built in the 11th century and associated with Emperor Alexios I Komnenos, Panagia Episkopi predates the island’s postcard villages by centuries. Its compact form, fresco fragments, marble screen and long religious history make it one of Santorini’s essential cultural stops.

The church stands in a quieter inland landscape and is best combined with Mesa Gonia or a vineyard visit. It remains a place of worship: cover shoulders, avoid flash and accept that access may pause for services. Confirm current hours locally before making a special journey.
