Acropolis of Lindos

The dramatic citadel above Lindos, combining the sanctuary of Athena Lindia with Hellenistic, medieval and later fortifications.

Our take

A sanctuary and fortress above Lindos’ natural harbour

The Acropolis of Lindos is powerful because the same rock served successive ideas of sanctuary and defence. The approach rises through the village to Hellenistic stoas, the temple of Athena Lindia and later fortification, with the harbour and east coast visible far below.

The climb is steep, polished and almost entirely exposed. Start at opening, carry water and do not use working animals for transport. Anyone with mobility limitations should assess the steps before committing, since the final ascent cannot be made step-free. Lindos becomes congested by late morning; stay locally or arrive before excursion traffic, then leave the hottest hours for the beach or a shaded lunch.
