Agios Nikolaos Islet and Venetian Castle

Agios Nikolaos islet shelters Gaios's channel and contains the remains of a Venetian castle, but landing and interior access must be confirmed.

Our take

See the wooded islet that turns Gaios into a protected harbour, landing only when current access and a local boat permit it

The islet is fundamental to Gaios's shape: together with Panagia it creates the long protected channel that has served fishing boats, ferries and yachts. Venetian fortifications survive among the trees, best understood as part of the harbour's strategic geography rather than a guaranteed open attraction.

Do not assume that seeing a jetty means public access. Ask the municipality or a licensed local skipper about current landing permission, paths and fire restrictions. Even without landing, the islet can be appreciated from the waterfront and on an authorised boat route.
