Climb before the heat to explore a fortress landscape far larger and rougher than it appears from the harbour
Venice began the fortress in the late sixteenth century to protect northern Kefalonia, creating a walled settlement across the headland rather than a single compact keep. Gates, bastions, cisterns, churches and later buildings survive among vegetation. The scale becomes clear only after passing the main gate and continuing beyond the first viewpoint.
Start at sunrise or early morning, carry water and wear closed shoes. Much of the interior is uneven and edges may be unguarded; do not enter unstable structures. There is little interpretation or shade, so read beforehand and allow two hours without trying to cover every wall.
