Read Prespa's great ruined basilica as a statement of medieval power, faith and contested geography
The roofless basilica is the island's defining monument. Its scale makes sense in the political world of Tsar Samuel, who transferred the saint's relics from Larissa after taking that city in the late tenth century. Masonry, column fragments and the broad nave still communicate an ambition far larger than today's settlement.
Follow the marked access, read the interpretation and do not climb on walls or move stone. The ground can be uneven and slippery after rain. Visit early or late for quieter light, while remembering that the annual May observance retains religious meaning beyond the archaeological site.
