The fortified ridge that explains Parga’s view and history
The Castle of Parga occupies the rocky headland that divides the harbour from Valtos. Most surviving walls reflect Venetian rebuilding after 1571, while Ali Pasha added a fortified citadel in the early nineteenth century. Gates, bastions, cisterns, barracks and church remains show that this was once a defended settlement, not only a lookout.
Reach the entrance by an uphill cobbled path from the old town. Wear shoes with grip, carry water and keep back from unprotected edges. The official site lists seasonal opening, so check the current schedule before climbing. Early morning gives cooler paths and more time to read the fortifications.
