Monastery of Panagia Faneromeni

The island’s principal monastery and pilgrimage site, set on a pine-covered hill west of Lefkada Town with a small ecclesiastical museum.

Our take

Lefkada’s active monastery above the lagoon and Agios Ioannis

Faneromeni is an active monastery dedicated to Lefkada’s patron saint. The present complex reflects rebuilding during and after Venetian rule, including work following fires in the nineteenth century. Its church, iconostasis and ecclesiastical museum place the visit within the island’s religious life rather than treating the hill only as a viewpoint.

Dress for a place of worship, keep voices low and check visitor access around services and feast days. The terraces look over Agios Ioannis, the lagoon and the coast near Lefkada Town. Combine the monastery with the town or northern beaches instead of adding it to a long west-coast driving day.
