Leave the café line and climb slowly through the working lanes behind Hydra's famous waterfront
The harbour works because it is not only a postcard. Ferries, fishing boats, water taxis and supply craft share the quay while porters move luggage into a town without private cars. Walk the full curve once, then turn uphill beside the cathedral or along Miaouli Street. Within minutes, restaurant noise gives way to small churches, grocery deliveries and stone homes set behind high walls.
Early morning is best for observing the port without evening crowds; dusk is better for atmosphere. Keep clear of mooring lines, moving carts and working animals, and never block the narrow quay for a photograph. The back lanes become steep quickly and polished stone can be slick after rain. A self-guided loop of sixty to ninety minutes is enough, but navigation is intentionally loose: descend whenever the slope or heat stops being enjoyable.
