Read the harbour through ship models, naval records and the papers of an island at war
Start here before treating Hydra's harbour as scenery. Ship models, paintings, weapons, navigation material and documents connect the stone mansions across the water with the merchants and captains who financed them. The archive also preserves records from the Greek War of Independence, when Hydra's ships and political families played an influence far greater than the island's size suggests.
Allow at least an hour and look for temporary exhibitions as well as the permanent rooms. Published opening times can change between summer and winter, so check the museum or municipality on the morning of your visit. The waterfront approach is relatively level by Hydra standards, but confirm interior access before relying on it. Continue around the harbour afterwards and identify the mansion-lined slopes with the collection fresh in mind.
