Give the whole fortified peninsula time, from the fourteen-arch land bridge to the sea gate and Bourtzi causeway
Methoni Castle is a fortified town rather than a single keep. The approach crosses a fourteen-arch bridge into the northern defences, then paths pass bastions, inscriptions, church remains, baths and traces of houses across a nine-hectare peninsula. Beyond the Sea Gate, a paved causeway reaches the two-storey Bourtzi, built by the Venetians around 1500 and later used as a prison under Ottoman rule.
Allow at least two hours and check the official opening notice before arrival. The interior is large, uneven and exposed, with little shade and several edges close to the sea. Carry water, wear closed shoes and keep off closed masonry. Strong wind and waves can make the Bourtzi causeway inappropriate even when the main enclosure remains open; never climb barriers to complete the photograph. Visit early, then view the walls again from the town beach near sunset.
