Olympos Village

A ridge-top village in northern Karpathos where music, dialect, dress, windmills and religious traditions remain part of daily community life.

Our take

A living mountain community with its own strong cultural rhythm

Olympos sits high in northern Karpathos, with houses descending on both sides of a narrow ridge. Its long isolation helped preserve distinctive speech, music, dress and festival customs. Those traditions belong to residents rather than to a performance schedule, so the most rewarding visit leaves space for ordinary village life.

Walk beyond the main lane, eat slowly and buy textiles or food directly from local makers when possible. Ask before photographing people, worship or private interiors. The mountain road is long and exposed; an organised boat-and-bus trip through Diafani can be a useful alternative when weather and schedules align.
