The church at the centre of Schinoussa's living village
Panagia Akathi stands in Chora, which is also known as Panagia after the church. The building is part of daily island life rather than a monument separated from it. Its icon of the Virgin is central to local devotion, and the church becomes the focus of the August celebrations when residents and returning families gather.
Visit quietly outside a service, dress with shoulders and knees covered and never photograph worshippers or the icon without permission. Access can change during liturgy, weddings and feast preparations. The church needs only a short visit, but it gives useful context to the village lanes and to an island whose annual rhythm is still shaped by religious and family occasions.
