The church's name, often translated as the Virgin of Death, refers to an icon unlike the familiar image of Mary with the infant Christ. Here she supports the crucified adult Christ, giving the small sanctuary unusual theological and emotional weight. Islanders gather around it especially for the feast connected with 23 August.
