Follow the river through Naousa to a place where beauty and the city's most painful revolutionary memory meet
Begin in the old town and follow the Arapitsa downstream past bridges and buildings that once depended on its water. At Stoumbanoi, a memorial recalls the women and children who died during the Ottoman destruction of Naousa in 1822. The rushing water and steep bank make the event easier to understand spatially, but this remains a place of mourning rather than a dramatic photo backdrop. Allow ninety minutes for an unhurried town walk and combine it with ERIA, which explains how the river later powered textile production. Paving and gradients vary, and wet leaves or winter ice can make the waterside route slippery. Keep behind barriers, supervise children beside the current and do not climb down for a closer image. Carnival days bring road closures and crowds; at quieter times, normal working hours give the best view of the surrounding neighbourhoods.
