An Archaic temple held above Aegina’s pine-covered east coast
The Temple of Aphaia gives Aegina a monument equal to its landscape. The surviving Doric structure belongs to the early fifth century BCE, while worship on the hill began much earlier. Its pedimental sculpture is now largely in Munich, making the on-site interpretation and the sanctuary’s setting especially important.
A car, taxi or planned bus journey is needed from Aegina Town. Allow an hour at the temple and combine it with Agia Marina or an inland village rather than racing around the whole island. The hilltop is exposed to sun and wind, though surrounding pines provide some relief. Check return transport before entering if travelling without a car.
