The Tholoi of Agathonisi

The Tholoi are unusual barrel-vaulted ancient structures near Megalo Chorio, associated with a wider archaeological landscape and later reuse.

Our take

Walk inland to Agathonisi's vaulted structures and resist reducing an uncertain archaeological story to a single label

These stone-vaulted buildings are Agathonisi's most distinctive cultural remains. Their exact function and chronology are more complex than the casual label of Byzantine granaries suggests, and surrounding traces point to longer occupation. Seeing them in the dry agricultural landscape is more illuminating than treating them as isolated curiosities.

Walk in cool hours with water and proper shoes. There may be no staff, interpretation or barrier at the site, so do not climb on masonry, enter unstable spaces or remove fragments. Ask island authorities about any current access restriction.
