Volax Boulder Landscape

A surreal field of rounded granite boulders surrounding the small village of Volax, where geology and a surviving basket-making tradition meet.

Our take

Granite, basketry and an island landscape unlike any other

Around Volax, enormous rounded granite blocks sit across the hills as though scattered by hand. The landscape has inspired myths, but its real power needs no invented explanation: the boulders, dry fields and compact village form one of the Cyclades’ most distinctive inland scenes.

Walk beyond the parking area, but stay on established paths and respect cultivated plots. In the village, look for working basket makers rather than treating the craft as decoration. Early or late light reveals the boulders best and avoids the harshest heat.
