A measured archaeological walk through the island's terraced interior
Kastelli holds the scattered remains of ancient Anafi: fortification traces, tombs, cisterns and worked stone distributed across a hill rather than arranged as a staffed archaeological park. The route is valuable because old terraces and paths explain how the island was crossed and cultivated. Continue only as far as daylight, heat and navigation allow; the longer signed network can lead onward towards Agios Mamas and the lower monastery.
Download the municipal walking leaflet before leaving and carry an offline map, because signs can weather and mobile coverage is not a safety plan. There is no ticket office, water point or guaranteed shade. Wear closed shoes, do not move stones or enter unstable tombs, and keep to established paths through grazing land. Start early, tell someone the intended route and turn around while the return remains straightforward rather than chasing a nominal endpoint.
