Read the island through its only substantial village before dinner
Chora deserves more than the walk between a room and a restaurant. Start low and follow the lanes upward, noticing how small squares, covered passages, churches and houses fit the slope. At the upper edge, remains of the Venetian Kastro and the church of Agios Georgios open the village towards sea and sky. The reward is the relationship between port, south-coast road and settlement, not a large intact castle.
The route is entirely on foot and includes polished steps, uneven paving and little midday shade. Go in the morning for errands or late afternoon before dinner, keep doorways clear and remember that most photogenic buildings are private homes. Chora is livelier after dark in high summer, but lighting fades quickly beyond the central lanes. Secure shoes and a phone torch are more useful than trying to drive into the pedestrian core.
