Ancient Olynthos Day Trip

Ancient Olynthos preserves an unusually legible Classical city plan and domestic mosaics, while many excavated objects are displayed in Polygyros.

Our take

Walk the gridded streets of Olynthos after using Polygyros's museum to recognise how its houses and mosaics fit together

Olynthos makes an ideal second day because the archaeological museum in Polygyros supplies the objects and the site supplies the urban scale. On the North Hill, a regular street grid and house plans reveal courtyards, workrooms and dining spaces more clearly than at many famous ruins. Pebble mosaics survive in several houses, and the on-site display helps visitors read the excavation without inventing a complete city from low walls.

Go early: the hillside has limited shade and becomes punishing in summer. Check Ministry of Culture hours and combined ticket arrangements, bring water and wear closed shoes. Stay on marked paths to protect walls and mosaics, and ask staff about the most accessible viewpoint if slopes are difficult. The drive from Polygyros is straightforward, but add time for agricultural traffic. Return by mid-afternoon rather than trying to bolt a distant peninsula onto the same day.
