Pelicans, herons and reedbeds observed at a respectful distance
Birds are not an optional extra at Prespa; they are central to how the wetland functions and why it is protected. Little Prespa supports major breeding populations of Dalmatian and great white pelicans alongside cormorants, herons and seasonal migrants. Useful observation areas include Koula, Mikrolimni, reed margins and the Agios Germanos stream, with morning light and quieter conditions usually improving the experience.
Bring binoculars or a spotting scope and let distance do the work. Never enter reedbeds, approach nesting islets, play calls, fly a drone or pressure birds for a photograph. Stay on public routes, keep dogs controlled and follow any temporary closure. May offers the widest variety, while winter has fewer species but large concentrations on open water. A local naturalist guide can add context without turning wildlife into a chase.
