Profitis Ilias Monastery Walk

The signed ascent to Profitis Ilias trades the busy waterfront for mountain paths, monastery history and broad Saronic Gulf views.

Our take

Climb from Hydra Town into the pine slopes for a serious half-day walk above the harbour

This is Hydra's most rewarding accessible-from-town hike, but it is not a casual extension of a harbour stroll. The route rises steadily through the settlement and into pine-covered slopes before reaching the nineteenth-century monastery. Views open gradually across the town and sea; the final approach feels properly removed from the day-trip circuit despite beginning at the port.

Use the official Hydra Trails map, start early and allow roughly four hours for a comfortable return with pauses. Carry more water than you expect to need because there is no dependable refreshment stop. Trail shoes are preferable to sandals, and the exposed sections should be avoided in strong heat, wind or poor visibility. The monastery is active: cover shoulders and knees, keep voices low and check visiting hours rather than assuming the interior will be open.
