Portelo Swimming Place

A pedestrian opening in Monemvasia's south wall leads to the former supply port, now a compact rock-and-platform swimming place beneath the fortress.

Our take

Swim below the south wall only when the sea and your ability make the historic access sensible

Portelo is not a conventional beach. Its value is the direct relationship with the fortress: residents once used this opening for supplies and swimming, and today steps lead down from the lower town to the water. The south-side position can provide shelter from northerly wind, but the sea remains open and conditions must be judged on arrival.

There is no sand, little room and no guarantee of a lifeguard. Enter only if ladders or steps are secure, the water is calm and you are confident swimming in depth. Do not jump from walls or block the access. Rock shoes help on wet surfaces. Families needing shallow water, shade or facilities should use Ampelakia or another mainland beach instead.
