Reach Kythnos's double-sided sandbar early and stay only as long as your return remains straightforward
Kolona's narrow ridge of sand joins Kythnos to the islet of Agios Loukas, creating a beach on both sides. The geography is genuinely unusual, yet the experience depends heavily on timing. Arrive early for space and softer light, then climb only to established viewpoints; erosion and loose ground do not need another informal shortcut. One side may be calmer when wind disturbs the other.
Road access includes rough, unsurfaced sections and may not be permitted by every rental agreement. A seasonal boat from Merichas can be easier, but its return depends on wind and demand. Shade is scarce away from paid facilities, phone coverage can falter and the sand becomes intensely hot. Carry water, keep a clear route back and never pressure a skipper to operate in unsafe conditions.
