Reconstruct the Great Gods sanctuary through a renewed five-gallery exhibition before walking among its foundations
The museum's permanent exhibition uses five halls around an atrium to put Samothrace's archaeology in order. Architectural reconstructions, sculpture and objects from across the island lead toward the Sanctuary of the Great Gods and the ancient visitor's experience of initiation. This is where fragmentary walls outside become buildings, and where the famous sanctuary can be understood without reducing it to the absent Winged Victory.
The Ministry of Culture publishes seasonal opening times, current tickets and days of closure; the ticket includes the adjacent archaeological site. Multimedia, parking, a lift, ramps and an accessible toilet are listed among the services, though visitors with specific needs should call ahead. Allow an hour inside and at least another ninety minutes outdoors. Start with the galleries during midday heat, or reverse the order when rain makes the sanctuary paths slippery.
