Fonias Lower Waterfall Route

The lower Fonias route follows a wooded stream to the first waterfall and pool, offering a serious introduction to Samothrace's water landscape without attempting upper cascades.

Our take

Walk only the lower gorge with a weather check and turn around before scrambling replaces a maintained path

Fonias carries mountain water through plane trees and rock before reaching the north coast. The lower route to the first waterfall is the appropriate objective for most visitors: it gives shade, running water and a clear sense of Mount Saos without requiring the exposed scrambling associated with higher pools. Even this section involves roots, loose stone, stream edges and surfaces polished by water.

Do not enter after rain, thunder, wildfire restrictions or any local warning. Flash flooding can arrive from higher slopes under a sky that looks acceptable at the trailhead. Wear footwear with grip, carry water, keep an offline route and turn back when the path becomes uncertain. Never jump into pools, climb wet rock beside a waterfall or follow social-media tracks above your competence. Mountain rescue response is not immediate, and mobile reception cannot be assumed inside the gorge.
